In the fight for their freedom The Netherlands accepted in 1586 one single governing body to oversee the coinage in their territories.
The placcaet of 1586 confirmed the important role of the gold ducat for the seven provinces as a nation of tradesmen for Europe: to pay for their purchases they needed a coin which was trusted in all places their ships would lead them.
In the United Seven Provinces of the Netherlands all provinces (counties) were allowed to mint their own coin, if the placcaet of 1586 was followed. Under the provisions of the Placcaet the ducat was minted to the following specifications:
